Ashdod, the most environmentally friendly city in the Mediterranean

The UN-sponsored Istanbul Prize for the Most Environmentally Friendly City was won this year by Ashdod, a coastal city in southern Israel.

This award recognizes Ashdod for measures in areas such as energy efficiency, public transport, water management – including leakage reduction – and efficient waste management combined with minimalization of waste sent to landfills, as well as coastal protection.

The jury, members of the Bureau oh the Contracting Parties to the Barcelona Convention and representatives of the Chairman of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development, chose Ashdod as the winner, ahead of Crikvenica in Croatia and the Turkish city of Hatay.
