Successful Infoday for the University of Patras

One of the most important objectives of the INHERIT project is the creation of “INHERITURA” areas, that is, designated areas in which human and tourism activities coexist with substantial natural heritage, and where “bottom-up” approaches take place to protect the and valorize the natural heritage from the negative effects of intensive tourism. For the University of Patras, the candidate "INHERITURA" area is the National Park of Chelmos-Vouraikos, where the pilot actions of the INHERIT project will take place. The “INHERITURA” label will bring several benefits to the area, such as increasing tourism flows while simultaneously - through the application of bottom-up measures - ensuring a positive impact on the environment, society, and economy.

In this framework and in order to inform all interested parties about the project and its pilot actions, an infoday took place on the 15th of October 2019 at Palaiologina Mansion, Kalavryta, Greece.

The Infoday started with the welcome speeches of Mr. Thanasis Papadopoulos (Mayor of Kalavryta Municipality) and Mr. Nikolaos Karaiskos (Deputy-Mayor of Cleansing Services of Aigaleia Municipality). Later, four presentations took place:

  • “The INHERIT project and its vision” by Prof. Christos Bouras, Scientific coordinator of INHERIT project for the University of Patras;
  • “Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos” by Prof. Grigorios Iatrou, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Chelmos-Vouraikos Management Body;
  • “The Life-IP 4 Natura project” by Prof. Panagiotis Dimopoulos, Professor at Biology Department, University of Patras;
  • “Pilot actions of INHERIT project” by Dr. Vasileios Kokkinos, Postgraduate student and team member of INHERIT project.

After the presentations, an open discussion took place. All parties expressed their interest in participating in the pilot actions. The Infoday concluded with the establishment of the Working Group for the pilot actions, which - in line with the corresponding methodologies - is a collection of economic operators, representatives from public and private organizations, and individuals with involvement and interest in the tourism industry and the protection of natural heritage.
