Voluntary cleaning in the candidate INHERITURA area of Puglia Region (Italy)

The Regional Park of Coastal Dunes Torre Canne-Torre San Leonardo, INHERITURA area candidate, welcomed a group of scouts from the 3rd to the 5th of September 2020 for environmental education and knowledge of the territory purposes.

The Park presents an 8 km-long coastal stretch of dunes, where, during the summer season, the anthropic pressure significantly increases. This is why the Park organised with the scouts coming from Fasano a voluntary and free activity dedicated to beach and dunes cleaning.

The waste was sorted and taken to the collection areas. The volunteer scouts also had the opportunity to visit the Park and learn more about it, receiving some illustrative material.

The Regional Park of Coastal Dunes extends over 1.100 hectares along the coast from Torre Canne to Torre San Leonardo through Ostuni and Fasano, in Puglia, and includes also some internal lands. The area crosses sand beaches, dunes, wetlands behind the dunes, fossil dunes, “lame” and secular olive trees. Therefore, it involves a high number of habitats, many of which are endangered animal and vegetal species protected thanks to the European network “Natura 2000”.

The territory is rich, complex to safeguard, with values to promote, and plays an important role in the environmental protection and relevant sustainable economic development.
