The Marseille fire brigade is experimenting with an airship to prevent forest fires

From 12th to 26th of July 2021, the fire brigade of Marseille will have a new tool against forest fire: an airship!

Developed by a company from La Ciotat, this airship is 13 meters long, with a flight time of 10 days, can withstand winds of up to 80 km/h, and has onboard infrared sensors that can detect the start of a fire 10 km away.

This airship will be a great help in fighting fires this summer, and will allow the 770 firefighters mobilised in the region to identify the fire zones more quickly and thus reduce impact on surrounding ecosystems.

The integration of new technologies is all the more important as the region is currently experiencing high levels of drought, and pressure of mass tourism in these areas is increasing risk of forest fires. The airship is currently being rented for the trial by the City of Marseille, it is the first French experiment in this field to fight forest fires.
